City Facilities Management (City) Champions Technician Training in Partnership with Beijer Ref Academy and SCM REF Australia
City’s continued focus on excellence and people development has driven a strong commitment to training throughout 2025. In partnership with the Beijer Ref Academy and SCM REF Australia, the company has supported technicians nationwide with specialised programs covering CO₂ Safety, CO₂ Systems Repair and Service, Advanced Transcritical CO₂ Systems, and Low GWP and Flammable Refrigerants.
From apprentices through to experienced technicians, participants have benefited from the upskilling opportunities, with many courses nationally accredited through Superior Training Centre (RTO 41122).
The increasingly popular Advanced Transcritical CO₂ Systems program was developed by SCM REF Australia in consultation with City Technical Training Lead, Anthony Hasphall.
"Our mission was clear: elevate our technicians' expertise. To achieve this, we joined forces with the SCM REF Australia team and developed a program precisely shaped to meet our exact needs."
The program focused on optimising system efficiency through advanced controls, targeted service and maintenance, and practical fault finding on units commonly used in the field. James West, Refrigeration and HVAC Technician and recent attendee, praised the program:
“The Advanced CO₂ course was great, highly interactive and perfectly suited to our day-to-day operations, with plenty of open discussions around breakdowns. It had a good mix of theory and practical, which really boosted self-confidence when working on new plant.”
SCM REF Australia Sales Manager, Jason Pearce, says technicians at every level are gaining valuable, hands-on experience and industry-recognised qualifications.
“We’re proud to share how City, in partnership with Beijer Ref Academy and SCM REF Australia, is continuing to raise the bar in technical expertise and safety. Our thanks go to Brian Toulson and Anthony Hasphall, and the wider City Engineering and Training teams.”
Speaking on the Low GWP and Flammable Refrigerants course, City Senior Refrigeration Specialist, Brian Toulson, shared:
“I’d like to commend Beijer Ref for supporting the technician base of the HVAC&R industry in Australia by providing recognised training in the safe handling, service, repair, installation, and commissioning of flammable refrigerant systems using the UEE nationally recognised courses.”
“R290, R600 and R1270 are excellent refrigerants that are becoming increasingly common in the commercial sector and will play a vital role in Australia’s carbon reduction journey. Having a well-trained technical base will reduce risks and ensure a safe transition. Well done to Beijer on this initiative.”
